Do you know your blood type?

By Tammera J. Karr, PhD

Asking if you know your blood type may seem a simple question to some, but in my years of clinical work, I routinely find clients have no idea what their blood types are or how blood type can play a role in sustainable health.  One of my mentors Anne Louise Gittelman published an article recently on this topic, and it reminded me of how valuable knowing our blood type can be.

Humans have four blood type categories, each blood type tells a story of an individual’s ancestry, what foods are best, and even what exercises render the best results. The four types: A which is for Agrarian, B for Bavarian, O for the Original hunter, and AB is the most modern blood type and has the best immune system. Still there exists another 400 sub categories for blood types, these all determine an individual’s health profile.

So let’s look at my blood type and more than likely yours also.

The theory – blood type Os retain the physiology of their early ancestors who were hunters and gatherers and sustained themselves on a high-protein diet. Heightened physical activity level was also necessary for survival.

The ideal source of fuel for the type O person is protein rather than sugar. When their diets primarily consist of protein as a fuel source, they should drop body fat and sustain lean body frames. They also should lose weight more efficiently when they eliminate grains, bread, legumes, and beans. The gluten in wheat reduces the effectiveness of insulin in the body and causes the metabolism to become slower.

Blood type O individuals should avoid consuming caffeinated drinks, including coffee, as well as alcoholic beverages, wines, spirits, and beer. Also exclude bacon, ham, and goose. Other foods restricted on a blood type O diet include herring and catfish. Grains to exclude on a blood type O diet include oats, wheat, semolina, and bulgur.

Fruits to avoid are; Avocados, melons, blackberries, strawberries, and oranges. Additionally, foods such as cabbage, sprouts, corn, mushrooms, and eggplant are on the avoid list. O individuals can have tomatoes, bananas, squash, grapes, and apples on occasion. Nuts to avoid include Brazil nuts, pistachios, cashews, and peanuts. Type O people can consume pine nuts, garbanzo, pecans, and almonds occasionally.

Peanut oil, corn oil, and safflower oil are not good for type O individuals. Using sesame occasionally. People who have type O blood should avoid using seasonings, including cinnamon, ketchup, vanilla, pepper, and nutmeg, in their meals.

Now before you completely disregard this information, I encourage you to read the work done by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo (eat for your blood type)  and consider giving it a try. I have had a detailed DNA test was done that combines my blood type information and know the foods I want most are also those best for me, and that I feel the best eating. Many of the foods highly touted as good for us may be inflammation causing and damaging our health.

Each of us is individuals and as such need meals, foods, activities, and environments unique to us. It is the age of Bio-individual therapies.
