Urgent Action Needed to Protect Your Health Freedom Rights
Drug companies provide 60% of the FDA’s drug review costs. This means the government’s regulation of pharmaceutical drugs is largely funded by the companies under review! Even worse, the FDA oversees nutritional supplements, which are prescription drugs’ biggest competition.
Twenty years ago, Congress passed DSHEA, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. With this law, Congress definitively stated that dietary supplements are a category of food, and not subject to FDA pre-approval.
Today, the picture is not as rosy:
• Anti-supplement agitators have been calling for a pre-approval system for supplements.
• The FDA could release the next version of the New Dietary Ingredient guidance any moment now. This draconian document could remove any of 30,000 supplements from the market.
• The FDA has proposed banning natural folate (an essential B vitamin) from supplements, allowing only synthetic folate instead—despite the fact that up to 40% of the population cannot effectively process synthetic folate. And this isn’t the first attempt; they have banned a natural form of a B vitamin in the past.
Why? The fewer supplements that are on the market,
the more opportunity for wildly expensive pharmaceutical drugs.
So long as the FDA receives funding from drug companies, we can’t trust the agency to effectively regulate supplements. We need your help to stop the slow erosion of supplement access. We need your help to make sure the FDA doesn’t have anything close to pre-approval authority over supplements.
The first step of our plan is to launch a massive grassroots, lobbying, and media campaign about the safety and effectiveness of supplements, and to expose the FDA’s conflicts of interest. The next step of the campaign is to start a major legislative offensive to strengthen DSHEA. This is no easy task.
